Early in 2017 we had decided to make a rocking horse for our grandson as every little boy or girl should possess such a traditional gift.
We bought a plan, obtained some tools, sourced local wood and made it. It took us a while as this was a new activity to us, although we do come from a family artisan background. Once the paints had cured sufficiently, we delivered our horse which became an instant hit. We also received an order for another one, and that started us on the path to creating a business.
With significant help from the Chambre des Metiers and our local Mairie in Sossay we became a micro enterprise in November 2017 and embarked on creating a variety of wooden toys and puzzles to suit all ages.
We invested in a complete workshop. A pro scroll saw and router table, various sanding machines, a thicknesser, table saw, lathe, drill press, dust extraction equipment and miscellaneous small tools and devices. In addition, we researched for child friendly non-toxic paints and varnishes as the surface finish is extremely important when our items will be played with by the very young. We have also amassed a library of books containing plans and ideas but many extraordinary products that we fabricate are unique to us and will not be found anywhere else in the world.
Our portfolio has grown to almost 300 different items now including miniature cars, trucks, boats and planes, rocking horses, dolls prams, dolls beds and toy boxes, wheel barrows, hanging mobiles, flappy birds, jigsaw puzzles, games of strategy, educational puzzles, bird boxes and feeding tables, name plaques, dinosaurs, cats and dogs, horses and goats, stacking toys, pull-along walking aids, and the list goes on! Many items can be personalised to add that unique touch, with a name and/or colouration.
Bespoke items can be made to order and we are constantly surprised at the unusual requests we get for plaques, name plates, named mobiles, animal puzzles, etc – there are some very imaginative people out there!
